Fiji doesn’t fake her tropical nature; this sun-blasted island is as lush and languorous as they come. Expect summer temperatures to sit prettily around the thirty-degree mark – the perfect heat for days spent alternating between the hammock and the waves. During the wet season of December and April, the rains can lash down turning everything into a mirage of silver and green. The winter months can take on a sea blown chill during the evening, so a cashmere sweater should suffice.

The sustainable emphasis stretches beyond the buzzword of design and into the kitchen at the Matanivusi Resort. A warm and homely dining space invites casual cool suppers punctuated by the salty tang of the sea and slices of moonlight. Warm timber, surfboards adorning the walls, and a menu that utilizes the finest gifts from the land and the sea make for a delectable experience day after day. Fruits and vegetables bloom in the resorts own sustainable gardens and the local villages, and the yellowfin tuna arrives fresh off the boat.
Couples who are feeling the pull of romance at Matanivusi can lose themselves in the splendour of private dining on their own candlelit deck or opt to nibble and gaze into each other’s eyes beneath the branches of the giant banyan tree.
The freshwater pool is perfect for those afternoon plunges, but the star of the swimming show at Matanivusi has to be the enormous saltwater lagoon located within the barrier reef. There is nothing that will make you sigh in delight more than the pleasure of rolling out of bed and into the cool waters with your snorkel mask. Here, tropical fish waltz in an underwater dance to blur the senses. The cocktail bar overlooking the pool makes it easy to lose hours with something colourful and cold in hand. Timber walkways weave around the pool, restaurant and down to the water – inviting barefoot luxury around the clock.
The Matanivusi Resort understands that surf and yoga complement each other beautifully. Deep in the folds of the green jungle – the elevated yoga deck connects you back with the green glint of nature and keeps you close to those cooling sea breezes. Daily yoga classes cater to each and every ability and those interested in pursuing their own personal sojourn can go down the path of private lessons.
With a keen emphasis on barefoot luxury, surf culture and sustainable-sensitivity – Matanivusi marks itself out as an adult’s playground. While families and children are more than welcome, honeymooners, surf couples and those seeking serenity will find a blissful balance beneath the palms of this Fijian paradise. The absence of a dedicated kids club and an environment geared towards the age range of 12 years and above keeps the mood sophisticated without a hint of stuffiness.
Designed to blend seamlessly into the natural surroundings; Matanivusi is a vision of sustainable style. No more than six stunning ocean front homes sit only a stone’s throw away from the lyricism of the sea – tucked away between the creek and the splayed coconut palms. Gold Coast architect Paul Uhlmann carved out this tropical vision that draws on an abundance of natural light, glass, warm timbers, foliage and natural plantation shutters. To celebrate the importance of sustainability – the resort has been carefully thought out with specialist recycling, water and waste management.
Guests can feel clear in their conscience that during their time at the Matanivusi they are leaving barely a print in the sand. Guests should be sure to bring their own toiletries including shampoo as in-keeping with the commitment to being eco-conscious; Matanivusi doesn’t provide single use toiletries in their bathrooms. A hairdryers is available on request.
Those who adore the intimacy of a truly boutique resort will love the fact that Matanivusi is open to only a handful of guests. Each of the six beautiful bures comes with two rooms – each with their own ensuite. Rooms are swirled in creamy warm color tones; punctuated with paradise touches like billowing mosquito nets, kick back and relax chairs, and endless glass so you don’t lose sight of the ocean swell. Each home has its own wide-open deck for sundowner drinks or lazy post surf afternoons with a cold beer in hand.
