SURFING

Sri Lanka’s surf scene is built on pristine blue peelers and good vibes. The surf in Sri Lanka dreams up a mellow vibe inviting surfers to cruise uncrowded waves against a backdrop of tea plantations and paradise. Fun waves and consistent offshore winds make Sri Lanka a great pace for all levels of surfers, from freshies to the more advanced.

The wave-rich southwest coast is home to Hikkaduwa and Weligama and offers great surfing conditions from November through to April. Southwest swells are common and the offshore winds breeze through in the mornings and late afternoons – surf conditions are best when it is hot and dry.

Cape Weligama is close to a string of waves, which dot the southern coast of Sri Lanka. There is an untouched reef break in front of the resort, which is only a paddle away. Access is hard unless you are staying at the resort so you are guaranteed an uncrowded break.

Weligama is a great spot for those learning to surf or beginners but intermediates and pros will also meet their match thanks to the nearby reef breaks that throw up some fun challenging conditions.

This region is littered with hidden reefs and long sandy-bottomed point breaks – like Rams Right, The Rock, Lazy Lefts, Weligama, Plantations and Mirissa Point which serves up high quality waves. Those who want a heavier wave can head to the nearby break of Hikkaduwa.
