The next saltwater obsession- Sumatra captures everything that is rare and wonderful about the world of surfing. While other spots in Indonesia run the risk of being trampled by tourism, Sumatra maintains her mystique. Once upon a time these jungle clad lands and pristine peaks were off-limits and completely inaccessible to all but the hardiest of travelling surfers. Now, thanks to only a few bespoke eco-resorts offering surf packages, those with a fierce spirit but still seeking the comfort of luxury can now explore the tropical swells of Sumatra.
The swells that roll in across these enigmatic Indonesian shores consistently hit between 6-12ft between the months of March and November. Pro and intermediate surfers are sure to be challenged. Outside of the larger than life season – the swells stay sweet for beginners and intermediates, coming in playfully at 3-6ft. Down in the south, the Lampung district is the beating heart of surf in Sumatra with most travellers setting up base around the bright seaside town of Krui. An hour north or south on either side will showcase thundering rights and seemingly endless left-handed reef breaks, beautiful barrels and the chance to ride the Sumatran Pipeline. Boat travel is the way to access those final frontiers – the Hinako Islands and the region of Simeulue.
Sumatra still boasts a secret stash of unnamed waves and secret spots that have yet to be claimed. The resorts are seemingly built from stardust and silence – meaning that grand commercialism hasn’t yet set in. Sumatra is the place to tap into your intrepid side.
