Maldives, LAAMU Atoll // September 2016 // SIX SENSES LAAMU // LAGOON Beach Villa // 4 Days

“The Maldives has always been a ‘bucket list’ place for us, somewhere that had forever been on our radar. With another baby on the way,  we decided to tick the Maldives and Six Senses Laamu off our list”.

Having already been in the Maldives for a week and a half, starting our trip at Kandooma Resort and Anantara Dhigu in the South Male Atoll. We were looking to finish on a high. We had heard amazing things about SIX SENSES LAAMU. There was a lot of chatter about the breakfast buffet and the waves on offer at Yin Yangs, but beyond that, what we had seen of the resort was that picture perfect Maldives resort that we had dreamed about.

The resort ticked all our boxes with quality waves and surf transfers, a kids retreat and an incredible spa for mum!

First Impressions

As we descended in over coconut groves, we could feel a change in the air and a shift from what we had already experienced on our Maldives adventure so far. The quick 35-minute flight from Male was an incredible opportunity to see the breathtaking chain of atolls dotted through the Maldivian Archipelago.

We were ushered from the airport to our awaiting boat transfer where we were welcomed aboard with homemade lemonade and fresh coconut from the shell. From here on in, our Six Senses experience blew our minds. We were encouraged to remove our shoes as our host explained that Olhuveli is a barefoot island and this was something we embraced for the length of our stay.

You’ll Love…

The uncrowded world-class waves, climate, turquoise waters, the breakfast buffet, your personal GEM (Guest Experience Manager), the water activities, free ice cream, the beautiful rooms, navigating the island by bike and surf season in the Maldives is during the off-season meaning accommodation is more affordable

The Drawbacks…

Limited kids menu, it was windy during the surf season and the islands mosquito population.

Any surf?

Scott scored his waves of the trip at Six Senses. Yin Yangs was 4-6 foot and firing for 3 days with only 4-6 other surfers in the water at a time. The outer reefs broke like a peaky beach break and quite easy to get back out in between sets. The end section at Yin Yangs is an amazing wave that wraps around the end of the reef and breaks super hollow on 1-3 foot of water depending on the tide. A real adrenalin wave when it’s on.

He was blown away that the Maldives had a wave of this level.

He also got a couple of waves at the islands house reef Jetty C, which was a long cruisy left hander with multiple sections right out the front of the east side of the island. The paddle or walk out at low tide is a bit much if you don’t have booties, but the watersport guides can make an easy drop off for you at the top of the reef.

Travel advice…

  • Pack light ladies, leave your quiver of shoes at home and tell your husband to pack his step up board
  • Request right-hand side of the plane on your flight down from Male.
  • Overwater villas are not baby friendly.
  • Come equipped with mosquito repellent although they do spray the island every day.
  • Stay on the lagoon side of the island during surf season; villas are protected from seasonal trade winds.
  • If you’re after an overwater villa, Villas 69 -79 face the Jetty C surf break and villas 69 & 70 have pools. Jetty C villas facing south allow for you to paddle straight off the deck.

Would you come back & why?

We would come back to Six Senses in a heartbeat. We LOVED it.

It was unlike any resort we have ever stayed. There was something extraordinary about the island and the whole experience.

  • Quality waves were only a short boat ride or paddle away and not crowded like central Male
  • The unique villas and resort facilities were beautiful
  • The range and quality of restaurants
  • Amazing spa facilities

Anything you would change next trip?

I would love to come back while not pregnant so that I could take advantage of more activities. I would have loved to dive with the Manta Rays!
